Not All Will Be Destroyed

Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it. The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.” Genesis 8:20-21 (NIV)

I travelled with an engineer colleague years ago on a business trip, and we discussed creation Vs. evolution at a dinner. I shared this before in Daily Cross. He argued that evolution is more scientifically oriented according to secular science, while creation is more like a fairy tale. Like everyone, he learned this from the school, books, internet and media.

“Let’s put some components, capacitors, inductors and resistors, microchips and memory chips into a strong leather bag. Let’s add some PCB bare boards and soldering paste to the bag as well. And then let’s hold this bag and shake it for 1,000 years, but only if we live that long. When you open the bag at the end of 1,000 years, will you find a finished product?” I said.

“That’s not possible! There will be broken parts or dust inside, and just garbage after 1,000 years of shaking the bag,” he said.

“I agree with you, it is impossible to create anything without a brilliant engineer’s mind behind it,” I said.

“Creating a living being from nothing probably requires a million times more knowledge than what we have today. It is not something a human can do. Those who tell you that evolution is about single-celled organisms evolving to multi-celled organisms and then becoming a monkey and then a human being either speak out of ignorance or have an agenda. Their agenda is simple: They want you to believe that there is no God,” I said.

We came to the topic of why, if God is good and a loving creator, so many bad things have happened in the world, and many people suffered and died. I had no answer to that. I always thought about that question. Many theologians do their best trying to explain that. But one thing I know is that the Creator has the right and authority to do whatever He thinks is the best. The same thing we do as engineers to create products. We make decisions to remove parts of the circuits for a reason and the reason is always for the best of the products. Imagine the protests and complaints from the components being removed and no longer being part of the design. If they are good components, they would all go back to the inventory to be reused again.

Remember what God promised after the big flood:

“… never again will I destroy all living creatures …”.

Our Lord Jesus Christ promised the same:

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Matthew 7:13-14 (NIV)

I think this promise is good enough. Not all will be destroyed.

What is the percentage of the few? 10% , 2%, or 0.1%?

I don’t think it matters. Abraham tried to argue with the Lord to save Sodom and Gomorrah.

Trust the Creator that His plan is the best.

In the meantime, the focus is on the Cross and one day at a time.
