The Right Hand That Causes Us To Stumble

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (NIV)

We rarely see the kind of love described by Apostle Paul in the world today. People often say, “Love is love,” to justify their actions. I think they deeply know something is wrong but still need affirmation to continue their sinful behaviours. It could be more manageable for their deep conscience to justify sins in the name of love. After all, it is Free Will.

We judge no one, and our Lord will judge everyone when the time comes.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.” Matthew 5:27-30 (NIV)

Many do not take this command seriously because it is too hard. Would you gouge your eyes out and throw them away? Would you cut your right hand off and throw it away? It is impossible. But I have seen men do that and experienced them myself.

How?

I have seen men regularly remove their glasses in public so they cannot see people around them. They would choose a different seat in a restaurant so their eyes could not see. I know men who throw away their smartphones, which are considered their right hands, and choose flip phones without internet access so they can only make and receive calls from their families. They stop watching TV and read more Bible. They leave laptops in their cars when they go home to their families and leave their phones on the kitchen table when they go to bed so their eyes cannot see.

There are more examples of denying oneself and following the command. Our Lord often used parables to explain things through generations. When we interpret His commands based on our limited knowledge, we can try to trust Him more than we trust ourselves and see what happens.

Before you start to do the same, there is a precondition that will make following this command easier: Love in the way described by Paul to the people you love. Love has supernatural power that is beyond the comprehension of the enemy.

Love never decays.
