Little Children

“At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven? He called a little child to Him, and placed the child among them. And He said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of Heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.” Matthew 18:1-5

I’m pretty sure that most people, including all the believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, want to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Therefore, we shall pay attention here because our Lord said that all authority in Heaven and on Earth has been given to Him by the Heavenly Father. Therefore, He gets to set the rules.

Let’s read His rule again:

“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of Heaven.”

You are no longer a child if you are reading this on Substack. So how can we become like children?

Remember that our Lord always talked about our hearts and spirits, not our flesh.

“Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” John 4:23-24 (NIV)

Let’s check and see the main character traits most children have:

1. Children love their parents and seek their approval

2.Children trust and depend on their parents 100%

3. Children can be disciplined and respect their parents

4. Children are humble and gentle

5. Children have compassion and empathy for their peers

6. Children have adaptability in all circumstances

7. Children are content and grateful for little things

8. Children are pure in heart

I may have missed some, but I hope you agree that most children have the above qualities. Let’s read Matthew 5 and see if these character traits match those of The Beatitudes taught by our Lord.

Our Lord said:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3-10

I see similarities here. What about you?

There are bigger sins and smaller sins, but they are all sins. I have witnessed men repent and become like little children with God’s unconditional love. They all wept when they received grace and forgiveness, myself included. All have sinned, and God is the ultimate judge. If our Lord could change those men and give them a new heart, He can change you and give you a new heart, too. The way to do this is to pick up the cross and deny oneself daily for our Lord. You will become like a child again with peace and joy and be ready for His return.

Just a reminder, this is a marathon, not a sprint.

Let’s continue on this journey.
