The Good Landlord and His Son – Part 2

“For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. But God found fault with the people and said: The days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord. This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.” Hebrews 8:7-13 (NIV)

This morning, I came to Hebrews 8 and thought about the Daily Cross “The Good Landlord and His Son”. I would like to add something more.

Christians are familiar with the first covenant God established with Moses and his people, commonly called the Law. This covenant was mainly for the people of Israel and Judah at the time. The first covenant was outdated and made obsolete with the arrival of the Messiah, Lord Jesus Christ, who established a new covenant for the people of Israel and everyone else. This new covenant is better and signed with our Lord’s blood.

The Good Landlord says to His tenants:

“The old contract has expired, and here is a new and better contract. It is still rent-free. But whenever you see My Son, you see Me. I love My Son, and My Son loves Me. Whatever My Son says, you must listen and obey. This is My Will and the new contract until the end.”

Some tenants refused the new contract. They did not want to recognize His Son.

Some tenants gladly accepted the new contract but continuously talked about the old contract and its people. Some of these tenants are considered leaders in guiding new tenants to follow and obey The Son but always prefer to teach the old way. I don’t know, maybe you have seen what I have seen in the churches. I thought maybe they had studied hard the history of the old contract and felt more comfortable since their hearts did not fully understand the new contract.

“Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.” Luke 7:44-47 (NIV)

One cannot teach something they do not truly understand. If we only focus on the old contract being a new tenant, then The Son died for nothing. There is a significant difference between the old and new:

“I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.” Hebrews 8:10 (NIV)

The Good Landlord had to send His Son, the last one available, when no one else was left to send. The new contract is written on the hearts, not on stone tablets. The new contract is also the last one, sealed with unconditional love and the blood of The Son of The Good Landlord.

The good thing is the new contract also comes with a condition to certify a good tenant:

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35 (NIV)

The Good Landlord and His Son will welcome the good tenants into the new mansion once the current lease ends when The Son of the Good Landlord returns.

It will be soon.
