Can Someone Lose Salvation

“…..With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? …….. So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. 2 Peter 3:8-14 (NIV)

Can Christians lose their salvation upon the return of our Lord Jesus Christ?

Some doctrines say it is impossible because our Lord Jesus Christ has already paid the price for our sins, and if we believe in Him, we have eternal salvation. I agree, but only if we believe in Him and trust and obey His commands. Our Lord said that whoever wants to become His disciples must deny himself and pick up the cross to follow Him. This tells us it is a journey to follow our Lord, not just a baptism ceremony. How many celebrities say they are Christians while living a sinful life? Our Lord only had disciples and non-disciples while he walked on Earth.

From the beginning of this ministry, we repeatedly said that our mission is to make disciples for our Lord by trusting and obeying His commands. Not all Christians are Disciples, but all Disciples are Christians. I believe our Lord is only interested in discipleship, not membership.

Suppose I’m right about this because our Lord cannot be mocked. We think we have secured our salvation but are just trying to fool ourselves with a false sense of security. But somehow, we know it because something inside us is trying to tell us. There is anxiety every time we hear the time is short and our Lord is returning soon comments. I have heard many responses when this topic was discussed. One sounded funny “Lord, please come. But don’t come today because I have golf.”

Some doctrines say the Rapture will happen, and the Church will be taken to spare from the suffering of the seven years of Tribulation. Who is the Church? Do they mean those with a church membership or those who attend church on Sunday? I don’t know. I found no evidence of the so-called Rapture in the Bible, which I have read and studied diligently, like the ultimate user’s manual for humanity. However, I found lots of Hollywood movies that talk about the Rapture. Why is the Rapture not in the Bible but in the films made by these people against our Lord? What is their agenda? I don’t know.

Suppose I’m right that there is no such thing as Rapture before our Lord’s return. No Christians will be taken to heaven to be spared from suffering during the tribulation so they can play golf in heaven and watch all the unbelievers suffer through the four horses, seven trumpets and seven plagues described in the Book of Revelation. Only because our Lord also said the following:

“The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows. But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” Luke 12:47-48 (NIV)

The one who does not know our Lord’s will shall receive much less punishment than the one who knows and is not doing it. What does it mean for you? Do you think salvation is still a sure thing for Christians? I believe the enemy wants to lead many astray; one tactic is to give people false assurance so they remain complacent. An ex-military told me there was a saying in their camp that complacency kills. We are on a battlefield daily against the enemy and his minions.

Peter also said: “..dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him”.

Peter did not say to relax but to make every effort to be found blameless upon our Lord’s return. Our Lord also said that only a few will find the narrow road and small gate that leads to salvation.

Now, the main question remains:

Can someone lose salvation?

Salvation is a by-product of trust, obedience, and unconditional love in our walk with our Lord Jesus Christ. Enjoy the walk and let Him decide the rest.
