Love And Expect Nothing in Return

“But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. I wept and wept because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or look inside. Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.” Revelation 5:3-5 (NIV)

If no one in Heaven was found worthy to open the scroll, no one on Earth could either. No one was worthy before God, but only His Son who took the punishment upon Himself for the sins of the world. If sins can be quantified, they must be trillion tons of weight for all the sins from the beginning to the end. It can crash anyone and anything. Have you seen sweating in blood? I don’t think so. But our Lord Jesus Christ did not hesitate and took the weight upon Himself. Because of that Love, salvation came to you and me.

“You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own Love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:6-8 (NIV)

Before our Lord saved me, I thought it was impossible for someone to choose to die for an unrighteous person and even be prepared for it and look forward to it. When a person is willing to do that and has that kind of love, I think the enemy is scared, and he stays far back. It is uncomprehensive for him and too powerful. The enemy can never understand the power of love when there is no love in him.

Sometimes, you may feel exhausted and resentful because you haven’t received any return from your love. The truth is that love can be a one-way street. It happened to our Lord with us. Love is not a feeling; it is a decision one makes. Otherwise, we may only be seeking our benefit without recognizing it.

When we decide to love, whether we receive it back or not, we are imitating our Lord’s example, so we know it is okay to love and expect nothing in return. Don’t listen to the world telling you otherwise and calling you names. They don’t know our Lord. They think He is a soft teacher, not a mighty King. You can pity them, but don’t let them affect your decision. When you are on a journey of unconditional love, your heart gradually changes for the better, one day at a time. Everything you see will be different.

How different?

I cannot tell you how because we are all different, and the gift of the Holy Spirit from our Lord is customized not for what we want but for what we need. I only know when our Lord sees good things done in secret. He will reward you accordingly.
