How Many Will Be On The Narrow Road

Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it. The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.” Genesis 8:20-21 (NIV)

I know that I don’t have answers to many things. I have been asked if God is a good and loving God, why so many bad things have happened in the world, and why many people suffered and died. I have no answer to that. I have seen many pastors doing their best and trying to explain. Our Lord has only asked me to trust and obey Him, and He did not ask me If I agree with His plan. I’m certain that the Creator has the right and authority to do whatever He thinks is the best for His creation and needs no permission from you and me. The same thing we do as engineers to design products. We can decide to remove parts of the design for a reason that is always for the best of the design. Imagine the protests and complaints from microchips and components being removed and no longer being part of the design. If they are good components, they will be returned to the inventory to be used again for a new purpose. They will not be thrown away in the garbage.

Remember what God promised after the big flood:

“… never again will I destroy all living creatures …”.

Our Lord Jesus Christ promised the same:

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Matthew 7:13-14 (NIV)

I like this promise, which is good enough because not everything will be destroyed.

How many will be on the narrow road? 10 %, 2 %, or 0.1 %?

Even 0.1 % of the world’s population is a good number compared with three persons left from Sodom and Gomorrah, which is 0.0002 % with an estimated population of 1.5 million based on online information.

Recently, a brother in my church shared his desire to be pure and blameless before our Lord. He knew that not all Christians would be saved because our Lord said so. Only those who love Him and obey His commands. This brother had doubts that he could stay on the narrow road. He asked for prayers. I always see that as a good sign because he has humbled himself. His experience is also that of many. Many ministry seminars can preach and give you a moment of spiritual high. But they cannot show you how to become a disciple, deny oneself, and pick up the cross daily. One cannot preach what one does not do. There is a name for that. Those teachers need to be on the narrow road themselves to understand it. It is never about spiritual high or low. It is about peace from a humble and gentle heart.

A marathon with a cross on a narrow road is unappealing to the most. It is not for everyone because it is against the desires of the flesh. If any marathon participants doubt the reward, giving up during this journey is likely because the broad road is much more appealing for the flesh. As we have said before, it is free will through and through. It is up to you to trust and obey our Lord that His plan is the best. Don’t focus on the percentage. It is never about the numbers or statistics. It is about your heart that you are with Him, not against Him.

Because our flesh is weak, it will be less difficult if you only take it one day at a time with eyes on the Cross. It is all about the journey, not the destination. Let Him decide. Trust His plan is always the best.

Enjoy your walk with our Lord today. Pray without ceasing with open eyes and heart.

Tomorrow is another day.
